Update of Progress 25/10/13

As of 25/10/13 i have created a time table that i can roughly follow for when i start to do my final products. I have also started to consider what genre and style i want for my trailer from completing my deconstructions for trailers. I have a rough idea on what i want to do for my poster however i still feel it could be added too that would make it a lot better. I am starting to become a lot more versatile with Photoshop as well which is really good especially for me, if you where to ask me what i thought of Photoshop last year it would be completely different than what id say now.

Skill Development

As far as my skills go when starting this project i had previously used Photoshop last year so i had an understanding of what i was doing and how i go about it in regards to editing images from scratch using different layers and the various tools available. However when doing my auxiliary tasks i noticed that i had spaces missing in backgrounds or hair that wasn't fully cropped, this i show i learnt how to use the liquify tool which allowed me to fill in spaces that where previously ruined because of the previous background image still playing a factor in the overall document.

When it came down to editing videos i have only ever used the final cut pro programme and nothing else, so when it came to using Premiere Pro things where a lot similar but at the same time a little different, i managed to quickly get a grasp on the layout of the programme and realised that it wasn't as complicated as previously thought. The one thing that confused me was the editing options for your video clips and it seemed weird that there was a search bar and you had to search for the correct editing technique in order to incorporate it into your work, luckily for me i knew the names for the editing styles i wanted to use so i didn't really have to worry about it.

This timetable was used for about 4-5 weeks while i was in the stage of creating my products, although i did have other things keeping me from really sticking to this time table i really stuck to it as best i could and managed to stay focused and get my work completed and with some time to spare.

I have deconstructed 3 Magazine covers, fully exploring all of the codes and conventions found and will use the information gathered to further help me in creating a great magazine front cover for my magazine.

Deconstructions of Trailers

Trailer 1- Bronson
This trailer is a good example of what i primarily want to do with the use of various quick cuts, close ups and high and low angle shots. All of the following are used to create a very gritty sort of comedic character that does whatever he wants with no disregard to his health or well being.

Mise- En- Scene

Setting: Leicestershire, Prison, Mental Instituition, Courtrooms, Family Homes, train car,

Costumes: patient gown, standard clothes, suit, sunglasses, vest and pants.

Expression: the character is very unstable and can go from a very normal expression to a very violent expression in the matter of seconds due to his violent nature, this gives the audiende the idea that the character of Bronson is very unstable and can lead to some quite interesting parts in the film.

Props: Sawed off shotgun, sunglasses, tie which he uses to choke one of the characters

Sort of a comedic way that it is set out with the choice of music, its very British but also quite silly and not as serious as it should be probably to give you an idea on the character himself.

Trailer 2- The Town
This trailer has a lot of action in and fast paced shots especially when it comes to the parts in the trailer where the action really picks up and the music starts to get faster and louder, id like to incorporate this into my work to keep my audience excited and on the edge of their seat.

Mise- En- Scene

Setting: Boston (America), Prison, bar, Courtrooms, Family Homes, out on the streets.

Costumes: Nuns costume , street clothes, suits, policemans uniform, paramedic costume

Expression: Main character has a conscience and often has a concerned look on his face and shows mercy in people who he maybe hurts of upsets, this is completely different when it comes to his brother in the film who shows no remorse and often has a determined look on his face.

Props: A varied range of multiple different guns , lighter, series of different halloween masks.

Trailer 3- The Dark Knight

I like this trailer a lot as it has a complete interptretation of right and wrong and how different they are, you have Batman the main character who fights for all the right reasons and the complete opposite in The Joker. There is also a lot of different things going on in the trailer but they are all related to the story which i found interesting which i might try to add into my trailer i am still trying to find out how i can incorporate it.

Costumes: Purple suit, Batman outfit, suits, police uniforms, clown costumes for the henchmen.

Expression: The main character often shows a look of concern on his face or worry but that changes to determination and anger as the trailer progresses. The Joker character however has a mostly joyful expression as he is always happy for whatever reason.

Props: Knifes, guns, playing cards, briefcase

Target Audience

My target audience is mostly for the 18+ group as my film will feature swearing in places and certain parts of violence this also brings in a mostly male sort of target audience as certain woman may not appreciate some of the scenes because of the choice of language and violence, also a level of violence is probably more appealing to a male than a female but some females who enjoy action films that has levels of violence may actually like it. The target social class would be working class as I feel like they could maybe relate to some of the characters as they come from a similar position in life, people who enyoy documentary esc films will also enjoy it becuase of the constant naration from the main character which gives you a little bit of an insight as to what the character is thinking. The genre of the film will be a thriller/documentary with elements of dark comedy  so that could also be catered more to a male audience as they might appreciate some of these scenes more than a female as for the most part it is just mindless violence for the sake of putting the message that this guy is not to be messed with in any way shape or form. Students might also enjoy the trailer for my film as it has a lot of action and fast paced scenes that is also wrapped around a sadistic plot that involves a lot of violence for the sake of being violent. Fans of heist movies like Inception or The Town will enjoy my trailer I think as it has similar codes and conventions to those films with an actual plot that takes you away from what is expected and gives you something completely different.

Considerations for Filming

1.    Are there any potential hazards that could pose a health and safety risk where your photo shoot will take place (trailing cables/traffic/other objects )?

– Wires and cables may be in the way when trying to shoot some of the scenes for my trailer and someone could get hurt.                                

2.    What will you do to ensure these risks are minimised?                                             

– Keep the area where I am shooting completely clear of hazards, anything that could be in the way will be moved as it could cause an accident. 

 3.    Will the time of day/weather affect the outcome of the finished assignment? Have you allowed for this? 

– The weather will not play a factor as pretty much all of my scenes are shot indoors with only a few scenes shot outside, if it happens to rain then the scenes i wanted to shoot will have to be shot another day.

4.   Do you need permission to shoot in the areas you want to shoot at?

– No the areas where i will be shooting are abandoned areas and also my home and my friends home's.

5.   Are other people/crowds likely to be an issue for you? What have you done to ensure that it will not spoil the shots?

– No as the shots are going to be shot indoors and the shots that are outisde need people in the background so either way it is a positive.

6.   Are you reliant on lifts/props/friends’ equipment/models? How have you planned that these things will come together at the appointed time? Plan B?   

– I have organised the date of the shooting when everyone involved will be availble,I also have people that would be willing to help as a plan b. I have a plan B also if some of my shots cant be recorded.

7. Finally have you thought of every eventuality…?

– Yes everything is sorted and accounted for.

Pitch Feedback

The feedback I received from my pitch where mostly positive my lecturer said that my idea was very creative and that I need to maybe develop the idea a little bit more because of the fade in and fade out parts of my trailer, he also has made the point that I need to consider how the pacing of my trailer is going to play out. He also made the point that I have used the music video in my pitch to help better peoples understanding of how I am going to show these camera effects in my trailer, I also need to consider how I am going to sort out my transitions for my trailer to make sure that it is a smooth transition ad that it isn't distracting or confusing. Other things to consider are how fast the parts in my trailer are going to be especially in the action sections of it. He has also made the point that my music needs to have similar themes to the actual trailer so that it sort of sets the mood for the trailer, I also need to consider diagetic and non diagetic sounds and which ones make sense in the scene and which ones don't.

 Other students who were in the audience for my pitch also had similar things to say most where complimenting my idea but somewhere confused as to how I could implement my fade in and fade out parts of my trailer without being confusing. Another point someone made was how I could have slow music in what is to be a pretty fast paced trailer also how some of the sound effects would be implemented like the sound of gun fire or talking between characters.

 My feedback was mostly positive and I have taken criticisms into account and will try to make my trailer better with the feedback that I have received.

Rationale Summer Work

Over the summer I was asked to come up with an idea for something that I would design and create myself I had to think of the layout also the genre/sub-genre and target audience of one of these briefs. I decided to go for number 7 on the brief which is to create a short film that should last no longer than 5 minutes and to then design a poster for that short film.

The Idea "Heist"

Plot

My idea is to make a short film about a series of robberies that are taking place right around the same time but instead of actually showing them commit the crimes I will show them before and after the crimes depending on how that certain robbery escalated and whether or not that certain character survived or not. The entire point of the robberies and my short film is to show how desperate people must be to commit these crimes and what length they will go to get what they want to provide for their family or just because of greed.

Genre

The Genre will be a thriller for my idea as it has all the elements of a thriller and suspense which will keep the audience paying attention. The film the Town played a big inspiration for this as parts of that film keeps you really in touch with what’s going on and keeps you guessing as to what is going to happen next, the movie Inception also played a key role as that is a heist movie but has different codes and conventions.

 

 Framing

When framing my short film I will mostly be using close ups and mid shots maybe one or two long shots but not more than one or two because I want the audience to feel like they are a part of the film like they are actually there with the characters. I’d like the close up shots to be no longer than maybe 2 or 3 seconds as I want to show more than one robbery and it saves time but also when robbing banks it’s like a flash it’s that quick so I get the best of both worlds. The mid shots will be from a customer’s point of view looking at the bank robbers but will be later faded when it comes to editing to show these characters being scared. To cut between scenes and also partly when showing mid shots etc the screen will distort and fade and then pop back into focus, this shows tension as you ant get a sense of reality as  you can’t see it properly and when these crimes are happening I can imagine the robbers to feel this way. The Wilhelm Scream by James Blake is a perfect way to show what I mean and how I want my film to be in places as in the video it fades distorts and when it comes back into focus the shot type has changed without you even noticing.

 Theme

My film will be mostly dark and gritty as I want this to have a sense of realism and I can’t imagine many robberies being bright and colourful. This will split my audience I think as my film is going to be an 18 and films such as The Dark Knight are rated 12A but some parts in that film are quite colourful especially when they are outside somewhere, whereas my film will mostly take place in secluded areas and quick cuts between the bright scenes which won’t be as appealing to a younger audience.

Target Audience

The target audience for my film will be as I've said in the paragraph above an 18 because of the entire theme of my film and how dark it is literally it has a sense of realism that I think a mature audience will appreciate more than someone who is a little younger. The film Trainspotting has codes and conventions of a gritty film that has a sense of realism which is something I want to incorporate.

 Audio

My film will have a non diagetic music element running throughout the entire short film, it will have up beat parts when certain scenes are taking place, in the background of this track though you will be able to hear gunfire shouting and screams to give you that secluded sort of feel to it, this mixed in with the screen constantly distorting and going to the next scene will make it where I can immediately switch between scenes and different robberies.
