The shot on the left is a high angle shot, this normally means that a character is being looked down upon by the camera, this type of shot is normally used to show insignificance but in this scene it is used to show how the world she is in is so over whelming that it overcomes her.
This is an Extreme Close Up, these types of shots are used to draw peoples attention to certain objects or body parts such as someone's eyes, in this case a spinning top is highlighted as it plays a key factor in the overall plot of the film.
- This is a Point of View shot which shows what the certain character sees through their own eyes, a POV is mostly used to get your more interested in the characters in this case Ariadne is listening to Cobb and his father discuss a business opportunity.
This is a Tilt, the example of the Tilt used in the image is to give the viewer an idea of how big and how complicated this world is and to make the audience feel like they are also there with the characters.
This is an over the shoulder shot which is mostly used to show a conversation between two characters. In this scene Cobb is talking to Fisher in a bar.
The image to the left is a Canted angle, these camera angles are used to show when something isn't what it seems within the shot, Canted angles are also used to show characters entering buildings to give you an idea on how big that building is or to show how the character reacts to actually physically seeing this building.
This is a Wide shot, a wide shot is used to give you an idea of where the character is at and what he / she is doing or where they are going, in this scene Cobb is about too be hit by a wave that is about to wake him up.
This is a Mid Shot, this shows the person from around waist up and this shot is used to show expression and in this case Cobb is leaning over a sink trying to make sure that he isn't still in a dream.
This shot is a Close Up shot, a Close Up shot is used to show a certain characters face and to focus more on the character individually, possibly to show expression, what dialogue they are saying or to make the scene seem more intense.
This is an Extreme Wide shot, these type of shots try to give you an idea of the scene as a whole and where the characters are going to be primarily, in this case a bridge is where this scene is taking place.
This shot I have included last is something that I have only seen in Inception and something I feel needs to be mentioned, it is a mixture of a canted angle, a long shot and a tracking shot.
Other shot types
Pan - This type of shot shows the character walking in from one side of the shot to the other in one continuous movement. This is used to give you an idea on what a certain character is like, it can also be used to show the audience what a scene looks like in terms of where the characters are.
Tracking shot A tracking shot is similar to a pan and a tilt as it follows the movement of a shot going at a constant speed usually the same speed as the character featured in the shot.
Handheld A handheld shot is a where the cameraman would just hold the camera in their hands and not have a tripod to hold the camera and then he / she would then continue to film a shot that requires movement of some form this gives it a POV feel to it.
Low AngleA low angle shot is the opposite of a High angle shot, it is used to show importance and strength of a character.
